WTF is
I WAS A TEENAGE SHE-DEVIL?

I WAS A TEENAGE SHE-DEVIL is a non-stop, big laugh, high-voltage musical from the twisted mind of Sean Matthew Whiteford!

After being pushed over the edge by the most popular kids at school, four-eyed wallflower Nancy Nelson cries to the heavens for help! But it is Satan who hears her cry. The Devil transforms Nancy into a big-haired, foul-mouthed, sex bomb rocker who's hungry for souls, and sweet revenge is on the menu! Who will save Nancy? And will the power of love for who she really is break the spell before it’s too late?

A Note From The Creator

"Flashback to 2011. I’m 23 years old, and my rock and roll theatre company needs a summer show for its 6th season. I walk into my video store closet for inspiration, and it hits me. I’m going to write a musical that embodies this exact feeling: my favorite thing in the world — finding the strangest title in the back of the video store as a kid, watching it late at night with your friends, and becoming obsessed. I’ve been a longtime fan of 80s culture in particular, and this musical was going to be my love letter to that.

I wrote the original version in just two weeks. We raised $5k on Kickstarter, and my nearly three-hour rock opus, Girlfriend From Hell: The Musical, had its moment at a tiny theatre in the East Village with no air conditioning on the hottest weekend of the summer. It was overly ambitious and ridiculous, but we all knew something really special had just been born. That was 15 years ago, and I still never grow tired of working on this show.

Over the years, it’s gone through several stagings, readings, and concerts. This project has blessed me with the chance to work with so many of my friends, collaborators, and heroes. It has grown with me through so many chapters of my life — and like me, it has grown weirder, deeper, and more itself. Last year, it became I WAS A TEENAGE SHE-DEVIL, and suddenly, the culmination of hard work, blood, sweat, and tears felt more worth it than ever.

This project was also born alongside my incredible wife (and the show’s costume designer), Juda, and it has become something we will always share and raise together. And now our human daughter, Nova, loves it too — and hopes to be in it someday!
Thank you to my fabulous director, Rachel Klein, our entire production team and cast, and all of you for continuing to give this wild demon child new life."
